Vanessa allowed Nathan to take her into a less populated area of the house. She felt his hand on her back like a brand, and she hoped her nervousness didn’t show. If Nathan sensed how uncertain she was about this course of action, the balance would certainly shift toward him again.

He tried a few doors in a hallway, and opened one wider on finding a small sitting room. “This will do.”

She entered first, and heard him close the door behind them.

“Where are we?” she asked.

“Somewhere private. I know how you like privacy.”

She turned to face him. “I like knowing what the devil you’re up to. What made you visit my old home?”

“I thought I might understand you if I knew your past.”

“Why should you want to know that?” she asked.

“So I could understand your present circumstances.”

“Which are…” With a raised eyebrow, she invited him to elaborate.

“Contradictory,” he said. “You give away some money, and tell no one about it. You don’t speak to your grandmother, yet she worries about you. You resolutely refuse to talk about your life, but you say you have no secrets. You are independently wealthy, yet you disdain the trappings of wealth.”

“The dress is new,” she objected.

“So it is.”

“You have nothing to say about my appearance?”

“Anyone who can still speak after seeing you tonight hasn’t been looking closely enough.”

She heard the new tone in his voice and suddenly blushed. “Oh.”

“I like you when you aren’t holding yourself in so. I wish my kiss had caused as much reaction.”

She tilted her head, puzzled. “It did.” Did he not know that?

“I don’t remember it that way,” he said, moving closer, his intention clear.

“Why should you? You didn’t even want to kiss me,” she objected weakly, for Nathan had already lowered his lips to hers.

“Whatever gave you that idea?” And he proceeded to prove her wrong.

Unlike the kiss in the park, they were not dressed for the outdoors now. No, now Nathan had access to her marvelous skin, and he could feel her reactions as he touched her. He abused this advantage shamelessly, turning one kiss into dozens, creating havoc where his lips trailed across her throat and down onto her chest. Vanessa felt like melting in his arms.

He paused only when he slipped the fingers of one hand under the pearl necklace. “This is getting in the way, sweeting. But I doubt you’d let me take it off.”

“Nathan,” she whispered, not really hearing him.

As if he knew what he was doing to her, he smiled. Letting the pearls fall back onto her neck, he caught one of her long auburn locks in his fingers, feeling the silky curl twine itself around him. “Yes, Vanessa?”

“Why are you doing this?”

“Doing what?” He tilted her chin up and kissed her again, his tongue teasing her lips until she moaned softly.

“Making fun of me,” she whispered.

He pulled back at her words, his eyes searching her face. “What do you mean?”

“Why are you playing with me like this, pretending you want to see me? Or kiss me? What have I done to you?”

“You’ve intrigued me,” he responded.
